Went to check out a self service car wash tonight for only the second time in my life. My first experience was pretty meh but this time it w ent well! I tried a new place and it ended up being much better.

None of that token nonsense, you could just swipe your credit card and go. Some peripheral stuff (vacuums, towel dispenser) only took quarters but there was a change machine right there.

This is after. The car wasn’t very dirty to begin with but I wanted to deal with some bird poop. Definitely not a Sven approved wash.

Had no wait and no cars behind me so I wasn’t stressed, e xcept for the $$ counter creeping up. Ended up paying $12.10 for a quick high pressure wash and dry , which is very reasonable. It was as good as a drive-through one (except for the wheels, which I didn’t do anything to) , which is like $25 around here . And since I skipped the low pressure soap brush, it was truly touchless.

Cameras everywhere, as it should be. This could actually be a great business to own.

Overall, this is a great option for me to do more regular cleaning without breaking the bank or my back . It’s only a 15 minute drive from my house and open 24/7. Plan is to come back with the A4 sometime soon. Thanks for reading.

These places are real stress relievers for me. Probably once a month I'll go around midnight and wash the Miata, always puts me in a better mood. Another plus is the few other people who wash their vehicles at that time are almost all enthusiasts, so I end up seeing some pretty interesting vehicles

Looks good and your happy which is the main thing.

If you want to add a couple of basics to it, add a quick detailer or standalone sealant and some good quality microfibres to dry the car and give it some protection.

That also great for rag top  too cars, I would never take the Rabbit through a automatic touch-less even if the top was in primo condition which it isn’t.. I don’t think your suppose to.

I will forever be infinitely jealous of your cars blue. The two things I would change about my e90 are the color, or complete lack their of,  and the fact that it isn’t a wagon.

Careful at those places at night. They’re murder machines in my AO.

What is your opinion on iron removers?

Indeed. Automatic car washes and convertibles are a no go. My best friend tested that conventional wisdom once. He said it was soaking experience with water coming in every where.

Totally for them.

Should be used on a well used car every six months in my book.

Brake dust can and does easily penetrate the cars paint/clear cote and cause the paint to blister over time. The best for the vehicle body is CarPro Iron-X or Bilt Hamber Korrosol.

For the wheels you can use either of the above more often as necessary to stop brake dust building up and baking into the wheel surface over time. I use Bilt Hamber Autowheels as it's a wheel cleaner and fallout remover in one. It's amazing just how much fallout comes out on even the cleanest looking of wheels.

I went to a shop looking into this pr a clay bar turns out i didnt need the clay bar. I hit the car with a medium compound and it came out very good. I want to get into polishing it with a dedicated polisher i did it by hand. The iron x stuff is very expensive. My paint was very dull before i hit it with the compound and i felt like  the spray wax would just not stick to the paint.

I don’t clay at all. I used a clay mitt a few times but I listen for what the car is saying and it only ever needs a good shampoo.

I prefer iron removers to claying as it greatly reduces the risks of micromarring the paint.

If the car sees a lot of miles I’d use a iron remover twice a year, spring and autumn, but otherwise leave it.

1litre of Iron-X should do three whole cars or six-seven sets of wheels.

Noted. Do you wash the car before applying the iron x?

Yes, do the full wash routine, then de-tar, re-wash area de-tarred, iron remover, rinse, re-wash area and then dry.

With non white cars your guessing about the iron fallout, much easier to spot on white cars as they are a caramel brown colour as opposed to the brown colour of tar.

But it is very much there behind the front wheel arches, rear wheel arches and rear bumper and up the rear of the car.

Glad to hear it.

It'll be quite a different pace of life for your family. I hope your missus and daughter are settling in okay too and your son is doing well.
